'Oldest Living Blogger' asks: "Was your power off this morning?" - "So," you ask, "What were you doing when the lights went out?" I'm glad you asked me that, because I'd like to tell you. May I? I was in the midst of filling out a 'feedback' form on a CTV website, when the old computer blacked out, and then flickered a few times, and then showed me a page of black screen with white printing, telling me what to do to get it recovered and functioning again and it seemed to already know about the power outage, because it mentioned that specifically. I thought that was very interesting - Why? - Because . Because I spent 20 years of my life in some of the gawd-awful'st places in not-always Beautiful British Columbia at B.C. Hydro generating stations and distribution stations doing my bit to keep your lights on - before Hydro's brass decided they could do it cheaper with people who didn't know how, or didn't understand why, or wouldn't go where it all got done. So me and about a thousand of my fellow old-timers got pushed out ...

Dances with Dependency: Success through Self-Reliance with Calvin Helin, Aboriginal Rights Author & Advocate - The shackles of dependency on government welfare have fostered atrocious living conditions for generations of Canadian aboriginals. If poverty could be reduced by increased funding alone, we would have seen success and an atmosphere of hope thriving decades ago. This long-standing problem has generated insightful solutions from Calvin Helin, author of the ground-breaking best-seller Dances with Dependency: Success through Self-Reliance. He suggests that an ownership society involving private property rights and true representative democracy on the part of aboriginal band leaders will create economic prosperity. Join us for a journey through this politically sensitive topic to see that change is not only possible, but well within reach. It isn't only an American problem - we all do it - and Dear Old Granny was right: "Waste Not, Want Not." Harm Reduction, '50s Style -  From:  http://pasttensevancouver.blogspot.com/ In the recent hullabaloo over Insite, Vancouver?s safe injection site for drug users, critics of the facility are doing their best to create the impression that harm reduction is the recent product of radicals. Their machinations have apparently been so successful that harm reduction is now orthodoxy, while dissenters are marginalized and can even lose their jobs just for questioning Insite. This conspiracy theory might be more convincing if Insite?s supposedly silenced critics didn?t have such a loud voice in the national and local media, or didn?t hold ...

Another nice sunset.... - Trying out my new Canon G9. The little Ixus-30 with 3x optical zoom just wasn't quite enough. I was going to buy one of Canon's refurbished cameras from their warehouse in Toronto, but after talking to their digital camera expert there, he pointed out that if what I wanted was more zoom, I should look at a new one, instead of adding extras onto a rebuilt one. So I took his advice, and went to London Drugs. It just happens they're having a sale on these this week. And they've got a 4 GB SDHC from Panasonic for only $27.98 and a spare battery from Optex for $39.98. So I now have the extras for it, too. Did I mention the User Guide is 273 pages? Most of us will probably never read half of them. I love its 6x optical zoom. At last, better close-ups. ...
